statement by the said Henry Ellis was read to your Petitioner who was then asked if he had any question to put to the said

Hanry Ellis. Your Petitioner replied that he had no questions

to ask.

Your Fetitioner then was charged by the Assistant Superintendent with telling a falsehood in the statement made

by him on the previous day.

Your Fetitioner in reply to the Assistant Superintendent stated by way of explanation that when he made his statement on the previous day he was excited and for that reason possibly cmitted to give some information and on being then asked for any further explanation stated that he reserved his defence, 8. On the following day your Petitioner was informed by the Assistant Superintendent that he was degraded to the rank of Warder, and such degradation thereupon took effect.

Your Petitioner thereupon brought his case to the notice of His Excellency the Governor of Hongkong with a view to an enquiry being held into the circumstances of his case but his

request was not granted.

Your Petitioner holds a good record in his service as Principal Warder and for a period of nine months in the years

Your 1909 and 1910 acted as Chief Warder of the Gaol. Patitioner also served for a period of five years from 1896 to 1901 in H. M. General Prison Berlinnie Glasgow and at Dundee

Prison under the Frison Commissioners of Scotland.

Your Patitioner has a wife and two children and is a man

of nearly 38 years of age.

12.

Under the circumstances above referred to your Petitioner considers that he has not received fair treatment in this matter inasmuch as apart from his conversation with the Assistant Superintendent of Victoria Gaol he has been given no opportunity of making any explanation of what took place and
